U13 Cricket v Hellesdon (2/7/13) – WON BY 4 RUNS
It was the second match of the season for the Victory U13 cricket team. Buoyed by a 25-run victory in the first game of the season against Aylsham High the boys were confident of another good performance but knew that Hellesdon would be a much tougher test.
The conditions were dull and overcast and the wind was blowing hard which was causing the ball to move all over the place, the pitch was also proving to be a leveller, with some unpredictable bounces making it very difficult for any batsman to get in and make a significant score.
Victory won the toss and captained by Will Breame elected to bat first. Will and Craig Wilson opened the batting but we lost Breame early to a ball that shot through and didn’t bounce. Wilson batted well and scored freely for a couple of overs playing some nice shots but eventually falling for 12 runs. The rest of the team dug in and hung around at the crease proving to be very difficult for the Hellesdon bowlers to dismiss but struggled to score runs off the bat. Particular mention must go to Harry Goddard and Liam ball who at the end of the innings moved the score forward. At the end of the innings Victory was 67-6, which at the time looked as though it would probably be 30 or so runs short of being competitive. But from the fixture the previous week, the boys have proved themselves to be an exceptional bowling side with a number of high quality bowlers all capable of taking wickets while surrendering very few runs. Hellesdon started positively with their opening batsman racing to 7 of his first over faced, but was dismissed quickly afterwards bowled by Logan Stearman. Wickets fell in quick succession after this until the Hellesdon middle order scored a succession of boundaries making it look as though they would cruise past the Victory score. However some excellent bowling performances halted this push leaving Hellesdon on 63-9 meaning that they required just 5 more runs from their remaining 5 overs. Criag Wilson and Will Breame came back on to bowl and finished the innings of in style taking the remaining wickets meaning that Victory won by 5 runs. That is now 2 victories in 2 games and with one final fixture to play, a win against Broadland High will mean that the U13 will win the league.
An exceptional performance again from the boys, but particular mention must go to all of the bowlers who were outstanding and ensured that we were victorious. Their figures were:
Craig Wilson: 4 overs bowled, 3 wickets for 5 runs.
Logan Stearman: 1 over bowled, 1 wicket for 11 runs.
Haydn Martin: 2 overs bowled, 1 wicket for 4 runs.
Will Breame: 4 overs bowled, 2 wickets for 6 runs.
Josiah Blake: 2 overs bowled, 2 wickets for 9 runs.
Sean Bidder: 2 overs bowled, 1 wicket for 21 runs.
Tatenda Kaguda: 1 over bowled, 0 wickets for 6 runs.
