Victory Achieves Stonewall Champion Schools Silver Award
Having been awarded the Stonewall Bronze Award in December 2018, we are now thrilled that Victory’s continuing commitment to the celebration of equality and diversity has again been recognised. This week, we were notified that Ormiston Victory Academy has now achieved the status of Stonewall Silver Champion School.
One of the key foci for the Silver Award was to look at how Victory supports students in challenging gender stereotypes. The feedback from the judging panel noted that “it’s wonderful to see the way in which challenging gender stereotypes is embedded in your school community and reflected in pupil’s independent work”. In addition to this, they commented that the Citizenship sessions on Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation and LGBT History Month were “excellent…please consider sharing these beyond your academy”. Our Celebrating Diversity board and the student engagement and reflective discussion generated by this was also highly commended.
The Stonewall Silver Award beautifully complements Ormiston Victory Academy’s Well-being and Schools Award (WAS), ensuring that students who are struggling in terms of gender identity and/or sexuality feel safe and fully supported in terms of their emotional well-being.
The window for beginning our submission for the Stonewall Champion Schools Gold Award opens in February and due to Victory’s underpinning ethos of inclusivity, and personalised support we are already well on our way to meeting the criteria for this award; rates of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying are extremely low, with restorative justice, education and reparation at the heart of our approach. All staff are trained to challenge HBT bullying and language and support LGBT young people and Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) is inclusive of LGBT people.
We very much look forward to updating you about our journey to the Gold Award!
